Neuroimaging techniques have experienced a great development in the last years, and now offer the possibility to characterize disorders of mental health in terms of alterations in large-scale brain networks. We will start by reviewing the main in-vivo neuroimaging techniques and the information that can be derived from each of them. Next, will present different examples of how disorders of mental health may be characterized using this information, and how this characterization should ultimately allow optimizing clinical management of patients. Finally, we will discuss the most important challenges for implementing a real translation of this knowledge to clinical settings, including the use of novel analysis methods based on machine learning approaches
