Georgi Derluguian

Georgi Derluguian is a well-known historical sociologist. His areas of research include ethnic violence, guerrilla movements and revolutions, particularly in the post-communist world and Africa, as well as post-Cold War globalization. He is currently a professor of Social Research and Public Policy at New York University Abu Dhabi.

His educational background is in African studies. In 1990 he moved to the United States to study for PhD in Sociology at State University of New York at Binghamton under the founder of world-systems analysis  Immanuel Wallerstein.  Upon receiving his PhD he taught at Northwestern University in Chicago. 

Since 2013 he has been a professor  at New York University Abu Dhabi.  

In 2005, he published award winning book “Bourdieu’s Secret Admirer in the Caucasus”. In 2006, The Times Literary Supplement placed the book among its Books of the Year. The book won the Norbert Elias Prize in 2007.

In 2013 with a group of world  famous sociologists – Immanuel Wallerstein; Craig Calhoun; Randall Collins; Michal Mann — he co-authored a bestselling and award winning book “Does Capitalism Have a Future?” His scholarly works translated in seventeen languages including German, Korean, Turkish, Arabic, and Polish.
