Long term challenges to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for food security face both opportunities and threats. Population growth has not outpaced food production growth, but what are the future prospects and challenges? Projections of OECD, World Bank and FAPRI for production, trade and prices will be presented along with stochastic analyses that shows ranges of possible outcomes. Projections for 2050 from FAO are discussed in view of both food security and nutrition security. Nutritional needs are clearly the greater challenge. Climate change is the major challenge, both in terms of near term episodic threats and the longer term crop migration and resulting human migration.
