Although functional neuroimaging studies have been classically considered to provide information about brain activity during the performance of different cognitive, emotional or sensorimotor protocols, in these last years there has been considerable progress in the development of methods aimed at describing coordinated patterns of activity between distant brain areas at rest. This has opened a new window for understanding brain functioning and its alterations. We will review the different methods for studying brain activity and interregional connectivity at rest, and how this information may be combined to provide an integrated account of brain function
